UV Protection for
Your Eyes

Arizona has among the highest UV exposure levels in the United States. What you put over your eyes every day has a direct, cumulative impact on your lifetime risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other serious conditions โ€” and not all sunglasses protect equally.

Damage You
Can't Feel

Ultraviolet radiation is invisible, but its effects on the eyes are real and cumulative. UV damage builds silently over decades — there is no immediate warning, and the harm is largely irreversible. Even on overcast days, UV rays penetrate cloud cover. At Scottsdale's latitude and elevation, UV levels are elevated for much of the year.

Cataracts UV radiation causes proteins in the lens to oxidize and cloud over decades — largely preventable with early protection.
Macular Degeneration Cumulative UV exposure is a significant, independent risk factor for AMD.
Photokeratitis & Pterygium "Sunburn of the cornea" and tissue growths from chronic UV and wind exposure.

Choosing the Right Protection

Not all sunglasses are created equal. "UV400" means the lenses block all ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometers — covering both UV-A and UV-B. A dark tint alone provides no UV protection whatsoever. In fact, dark lenses without UV coating are worse than no sunglasses at all: dilated pupils in the shade of a dark lens admit more UV than they would in bright, squinting conditions.

Polarization reduces glare from reflective surfaces — roads, water, dashboards — which dramatically improves comfort and safety while driving or near water. Polarization does not automatically equal UV protection. Always verify both features when purchasing. Quality brands including Maui Jim, Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Persol meet UV400 standards by default.

When selecting sunglasses at Visions Optique & Eyecare, our team helps you find UV400-certified lenses with polarization for driving, a wraparound or larger frame for better peripheral protection, and prescription options — because contact lenses provide no UV protection to the surrounding eye tissues.
