Understanding 20/20 Vision

20/20 vision is commonly seen as “perfect” vision. But what exactly does 20/20 vision mean?

The term 20/20 is used to denote normal vision acuity, which means the sharpness or clarity of your vision when measured from a distance of 20 feet.

When your vision is 20/20, you don’t need any visual assistance, like glasses or contacts, to help you see better. This means that, standing at 20 feet, you should be able to read or see something just as well as someone else standing at 20 feet should be able to. This has made 20/20 the standard baseline for testing and understanding visual acuity.

That doesn’t mean 20/20 vision is the best vision you can have, however. In fact, there are some people who have even better vision. For example, someone with 20/15 visions can see objects at 20 feet that people can only see at 15 feet. When your vision is worse than 20/20, like 20/60, you can see at 20 feet what a person with standard vision would see at 20/60.

Depending on the state you live in, if you reach a certain vision, you’re required to drive with visual assistance — like glasses or contact — that correct your vision to the required vision. In Arizona, the vision cut off for driving is 20/70 when using both eyes, or 20/50 using one eye.

Reasons You Should Visit an Eyecare Professional

One common misconception about optometrists is that you don’t need to schedule regular eyecare visits if you don’t need any corrective lenses or don’t have any problems with your eyes, but that’s not true!

Your eyes are an important part of your health. If you don’t fall into the category of the half of Amercians that need corrective lenses, that doesn’t make your eyecare health any less important. A routine visit to your optometrist will ensure that there’s no change in your vision. But they will also check your family history or a history of hereditary eye diseases, like:

  • Color blindness
  • Glaucoma
  • Night blindness
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Starbius (cross-eyes)
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • And more

Certain eye problems can also emerge or worsen over time, and might not even affect your vision at first. When you’re visiting regularly with an optometrist, you have a better understanding of the health of your eyes and any concerns you should have.

New Year. New Decade. New Glasses.

When we say get 20/20 vision in 2020, our team at Vision Optique wants to help you keep your vision in mind this year. Whether it’s time to schedule your routine eye exam, or if you’re worried that your prescription has changed, or you need a new pair of glasses, make 2020 the year to do it!

At Visions Optique, beyond our two amazing optometrists, we carry a great selection of high-end, designer eyewear so you can find something perfect for the new decade. Not sure which style is right for you? Mix up your style with a new eyeglass style that’s trending this year:

  • Oversized frames: Have you seen a recent surge in the amount of oversized glasses you’re seeing? Just a few years ago, slim frames were a big hit. But in 2020, we’ve seen oversize square and circle lenses become a big hit.
  • Cat-eyes: While cat-eye frames were big in the 1950s, they’ve made a comeback for the new decade. If you love vintage and trendy, upgrade to a sleek pair of cat-eyes. Not ready to make that kind of commitment with your eyeglasses? Start the decade off right with a pair of cat-eye prescription sunglasses to try it out.
  • Metal frames: Industrial, metal accents — ranging from metal furniture to renovated industrial lofts — is a design trend that has carried over to the world of eyeglass styles. If you’re looking for something that simple but still in style, upgrade your old pair of glasses for a simple, metal frame in your favorite metal.

Not one that usually follows the latest trends? Try mixing it up from your usual option. If you’re taking control of your eye health this year, make sure you have a new, stylish frame to match!
